GEOGRAPHY

WHY DO GEOGRAPHY?

Geography is one of the most exiting subjects. If you are interested in pursuing a career in an area that genuinely makes a difference to the world we live in, you should consider geography.

From understanding everything from how and why volcanos are formed to the impact of overcrowding in urban areas, geographers are integral to help find solutions to some of the biggest issues in the world, such as climate change, urban over-development and natural disasters.

The subject is interesting, stimulating and links well with subjects like Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Economics and Tourism.  Geography offers a broad range of career outcomes and, with the increasing global focus on the issues geographers are equipped to address, employment opportunities are growing exponentially.

SKILLS

Geography is enormously relevant in all areas of our lives, and geographical skills and considerations are associated with most of the decisions we make, on a daily basis.

For example, Geography has direct bearing on:

Personal decisions on where to live and work, how to get to a friend’s house, and where to shop, holiday, or go to school

Community decisions related to pollution and environmental issues, and the placement of industries, schools, and residential areas

Business and government decisions ranging from the placement of a supermarket or an airport, to issues around trade, zoning, politics, foreign affairs, and economic policy

Geography students will acquire and use a multitude of skills. Some of these are subject-specific, while others are of a general nature and call for critical thinking skills such as knowing, inferring, analyzing, judging, hypothesizing, generalizing, predicting, problem-solving, and decision-making.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:

Many career choices are open to people who study Geography, and having excelled in this subject at school may be an advantage when seeking acceptance at tertiary institutions. Geography professionals include Pilots, cartographers, commercial or residential surveyors, environmental consultants, geographical information systems officers, planning and development surveyors, secondary school teachers, Meteorologists, Geologists and town planners.

A degree in Geography might also be useful to international aid or development officers, landscape architects, logistics and distribution managers, mining engineers, civil engineers, market researchers, nature conservation officers, agricultural professions, tourism officers, and transport planners.

With Geography you have the world at your feet!

GEOGRAFIE / AARDRYKSKUNDE

WAAROM GEOGRAFIE AS VAK KIES?
